Classroom Practices for Building Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics

Abstract

Mathematics classroom practices mostly consider procedural fluency. But for the deeper understanding it is important to foster the mathematical processes by organizing various activities in the classroom. For each mathematical process, a teacher should play a crucial role to arrange such challenging tasks where each student will become active participant and deepen their conceptual understanding with dynamic classroom discourse. Such classrooms will transform the pedagogy from rote memorization to Mathematical proficiency.
