Textbooks are the backbone of the entire education system. The National Curriculum Consultation 2005 suggested that social science textbooks should be such that they arouse curiosity, open doors to further learning. Textbooks should use creative materials, newspaper clippings, pictures, posters, cartoons, maps, diagrams and other resources of knowledge instead of just word-based lessons. Therefore, in the textbooks produced by the National Council of Educational Research and Training's Textbook Determination Committee, various genres of pictures have been made an integral part of the content. The details available in the textbook are illustrated with completeness. Textbook caters to children's learning style. There are four types of images in the text book - picture, map, picture and drawing. The text book has an abundance of pictures and color pictures. The representation of male characters in the genre of pictures was found to be more than the representation of female characters. Gender equality was not found to be shown in the pictures displayed in the textbook.
