Online Learning Readiness Among Secondary Students in Davao City: A Descriptive Study

Online Learning Readiness Among Secondary Students in Davao City: A Descriptive Study

Abstract

. The Department of Education in the Philippines highlighted online learning as its learning modality for the continuity of learning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was conducted to determine the level of online learning readiness in public and private secondary schools in Davao City. The questionnaire was administered online from May 19-29, 2020, and gathered a total of 1710 respondents from grades seven to twelve. The result showed that on the average, the level of online learning readiness of the students was high at 3.59 (SD=.54) with motivation for learning having the highest average of 4.00 (SD=.63), followed by self-directed learning with 3.60 (SD=.58) both described as high and equally 3.33 computer/internet self-efficacy, learner control and online communication self-efficacy described as moderate. The inferential analysis showed that gender and school type do not influence respondents' level of readiness across the constructs except for motivation for learning where private have a significantly higher level than the public (Z=-3.432; p=.001). However, Dunn’s test of multiple comparisons with Bonferroni correction revealed that in terms of computer/internet self-efficacy, the difference lies between JHS1 and JHS2 with the former having a higher level (Z=2.557; p=.016). Interestingly, JHS1 students have a higher level of learner-control than JHS2 and SHS significantly (Z=2.611; p=.014; Z=4.472; p=.000). The same pattern was also observed for online communication self-efficacy, JHS1 students have a significantly higher level as compared to JHS2 and SHS (Z=3.099; p=.003; Z=3.696; p=.000).
