South Africa has a rich Phyxelididae fauna represented by nine genera and 30 species. The family has been revised in 1990. Of the 30 species only three are known from southern Africa while re rest are all South African endemics. Ten of the species are data deficient while 16 are listed as Least Concern due to their distribution and lack of threats. Only four species are of special concern: Malaika longipes (Purcell, 1904) is listed as Rare while Themacrys silvicola (Lawrence, 1938), Vidole helicigyna Griswold, 1990 and Xevioso lichmadina Griswold, 1990 are listed as Vulnerable under criterion B.
