Site System Scheme: representing how environmental pressures affect vegetation through site characteristics

Abstract

Bestanden tool: Microsoft Access 2003 databank (.mdb) incl. scripts in Visual Basic for Applications: systeemschema_standplaats_v0_1_0.mdb begeleidende toelichting: PDF bestand Herr_Vanderhaeghe_2022_toelichting_systeemschema_standplaats.pdf (Herr C. & Vanderhaeghe F. (2022). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Site System Scheme: representing how environmental pressures affect vegetation through site characteristics. The Site System Scheme is a visualization tool and a database about relationships between vegetation, site factors and environmental pressures. Its core indicates which site factors in which environmental compartments (atmosphere, soil, subaqueous soil, groundwater, inundation water, surface water column) are directly or indirectly relevant to vegetation. This tool provides a schematic representation of the environmental compartments and shows, for the main environmental pressures that affect the European protected habitat types in Flanders: which site factors are directly resp. indirectly influenced by the environmental pressure; in which direction these site factors evolve under the environmental pressure; which environmental compartment is affected first. The Site System Scheme has been developed for the environmental pressures belonging to the following classes: physical modification (incl. soil compaction, infrastructure, reprofiling, soil transport and changes in soil dynamics) eutrophication acidification change of groundwater level change of surface water hydrology (incl changes in flood duration or frequency, in surface water velocity, in water level and changes of wave impact) desalination and salinization pollution climate change (incl. sea level rise) The relationships illustrated in the Site System Scheme are based on established knowledge (from literature) about the ecology of different ecosystems ranging from dry to aquatic environments. The Site System Scheme can a.o. be used to obtain a well-informed selection of site factors. Disclaimer The Site System Scheme was originally developed for internal use within the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). Despite all the care that has been taken with the tool, this version is to be considered as a first version and we cannot guarantee that the information will be complete and/or correct at all times. The Research Institute for Nature and Forest cannot be held liable for any errors and/or inaccuracies and for direct or indirect damage, of whatever nature, resulting from the use of the tool. Users who identify problems (both technical and related to content) are invited to contact the authors. The MS Access database contains scripts in Visual Basic for Applications that are necessary for the proper functioning of the tool. The user can enable the scripts by clicking the “enable content” button that appears with the security warning. Contribute We welcome anyone who wants to contribute to the further development or optimization of this tool. Do not hesitate to contact the authors.
