Abstract

Tadhkirat-alumarâ. This manuscript is now IO Islamic 2685 in the India Office collections. [metadata: Hermann Ethé, Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, 2 vols. (Oxford: India Office, 1903): volume 1, number 629 here with notations and hyperlinks]. 629 Tadhkirat-alumarâ (تذكرة الامرا). The biographical dictionary of famous Amîrs and Khâns who served under the Moghul emperors of India, Akbar, Jahângîr, Shâhjahân , and ‘Âlamgîr, compiled by Kîwal Râm, son of Raghunâth Dâs ; comp. Bodleian Cat.[Catalogue of the Persian, Turkish, Hindûstânî and Pushtû Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library], no. 258 ; Rieu i [Catalogue of the Persian Manuscripts in the British Museum, vol. 1], p. 339 ; A. Sprenger, MSS. of the late Sir H. Elliot, in Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal, vol. xxiii. p. 239, no. 70; Elliot, History of India, viii. p. 192. The date of composition is here distinctly 1194 (A.D. 1780); see fol. 2b, I.3. Other copies exhibit the dates 1184 and even (if it is not a mere mistake in writing) 1140 (as the Bodleian copy does , a date which after all would not be inconsistent with the chronology of the tadhkirah, as it does not mention any Amîrs beyond ‘Âlamgîr’s reign). The work is divided into two bâbs, the first containing the Muḥammadan, the second the Hindû Amîrs, both in alphabetical order. Each bâb is subdivided into two faṣls, viz.: First bâb: فصل اوّل در ذكر اميرانى كه بخطاب خانى و غيره سرافراز شده اند , on fol. 2b ; with an appendix, در ذكر وصل فصل اوّل , on fol. 197a . Copied from a MS. in the possession of Captain [Thomas] Roebuck [1781-1819], by Munshî Mirzâibeg. No date. No. 2685, ff. 294, II. 15-17; Shikasta; size, 103/4 in. by 75/8 in.
