Abstract

An unpublished fragment of a mid-13th-century judicial register offers the opportunity to study a series of resolutions and pronouncements on civil matters issued by the highest Genoese courts. By analysing these documents, this contribution aims to explore the main officers’ area of expertise of the judicial system. Particular attention will be paid to notary Baldovino de Ioço, in charge as scriba potestatis, and to the ways he drafted these documents, in an attempt to grasp, at least indirectly, the procedural elements and organizational methods of the court. The analysis of the notary’s biography and professional profile contributes to the investigation of the professionals involved in public administration as notaries.
