Gabinetes, boticas e bibliotecas

Abstract

CABINETS, APOTHECARIES’ SHOPS AND LIBRARIES Abstract: Cabinets (Curios, Natural History), Apothecaries’ Shops (Convents, Universities) and Libraries (Royal Palaces, Academies) are spaces, the former old, the latter modern, with proximity — a clear distance between them. In common they have the fact that they are used to shelter the collection, the reserve, the maintenance and the projection of a material heritage and a spiritual legacy. The difference is the type of operational usefulness assigned to them. They emerge because the epistemic configurations whence they arise need them, and will let them act within the limits of the allowed-forbidden, where dominant knowledges always intervene in one or the other case. Over time they have undergone changes, and these changes have resulted even from some breaks. That is another reason why it matters to determine the epistemological changes that have occurred between these spaces and their peoples. Keywords: curio cabinets; epistemological change; natural history.
