Abstract

INSCRIBING SCIENCE: SCIENTIFIC TEXTS AND THE MATERIALITIES OF COMMUNICATION Abstract: Metaphors of inscription and writing are very important in all levels of discourse in and about science. This paper discusses the recent directions in Science Studies that consider the scientific descriptions and rhetoric as more than metaphoric, as revelatory of the processes of signification in science more generally. Pursuing the notion that Derrida's deconstruction deserves our serious consideration, | argue that the questions forming his grammatology are relevant to understand the relations among science and the social, economic and political world. However, I think it is crucial to avoid slipping into a discoursive determinism, taking language as a closed system of signs that produces meaning independent of subjective intentions, relations of dominations, and struggles to construct and sustain meaningful domains of practice. So, | see as very important the studies emphasizing the historically situated character of scientific representation. | see these two approaches as compatible at all. They can shed interesting light on scientific practice and lead us out of the battles over multiculturalism, college curricula and the discussions about the (im)possibility of a single objective truth. Keywords: Science — Cultural Studies — Derrida — Representation — Semiotic Tum.
