(a) Subsp.sphegodes: Outer perianth-segments green. Label lum (8—)10—12 x 8-12 mm, with or without large basal protuber ances, brown or dark brown, velutinous, entire, rarely indistinctly 3-lobed; speculum usually H-shaped, rarely with the cross line absent, glabrous. 2n = 36. Throughout the range of the species except parts of the south-east.
