The relationships between this species and two congeners, P. militaris and P. heterochrous, are discussed in the Remarks of P. militaris. Distribution. Gulf of Thailand, Philippines Islands, Indonesia, New Guinea, western and eastern Australia, Nansha Islands in China; Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands, New Caledonia, and the Loyalty Islands; shallow water to about 55 m, frequently in association with corals (Haig 1979; Hsieh, et al. 1997; Yang & Naiyanetr 1997; present study).
