Western Atlantic – East coast of the United States, Antilles, and Brazil (from Pará to Alagoas) (Melo 1996). Ecological notes. On sand, rock, and algae bottoms. From shallow waters to 30 m (Melo 1996). Previous records in Bahia. None. Remarks. The present record extends the southern distributional limit known for M. laevigatum, formerly represented by Alagoas State, Brazil (Coelho 1971; Melo 1996), to Camamu Bay (13° S).
