Sphyraenidae The European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena (Linnaeus, 1758) was recorded from Madeira by Ben- Tuvia in Whitehead et al. (1986: 1195) and Sylva in Quéro et al. (1990: 863-864), also for instance by Edwards (1993). According to Wirtz (1998), these records are likely to be confusions with the common Sphyraena viridensis. Sphyraena barracuda (Edwards in Catesby, 1771)—Great barracuda Recorded from Madeira by Wirtz (1998). * Sphyraena viridensis Cuvier, 1829 —Yellowmouth barracuda Recorded from Madeira by Wirtz (1994: 53); the photo published in this book is, however from the Azores.
