Fasciolaria trapezium Lamarck

Abstract

Fasciolaria trapezium (Linnaeus, 1758) 1758 Murex trapezium Linnaeus: 755, sp. no. 493 1816 Fasciolaria trapezium (Linnaeus) Lamarck: 7, pl. 431, figs. 3a, b 1822 Fasciolaria trapezium (Linnaeus) Lamarck: 119, sp. no. 3 1830 Fasciolaria trapezium (Linnaeus)) Deshayes: 125 1840b Kiener: 8, pl. 6 Locality of Lamarck’s material: l’Océan des grandes Indes. Material in MHNG, Lamarck collection: 1 specimen MHNG INVE 51694 (ex MHNG 1097/96), 95.5 mm. 1 specimen MHNG INVE 51698 (ex MHNG 1097/100), 18 cm, bearing a faded handwritten label inside the aperture of the shell, Fasc. Trapezium, written by Lamarck. Locality on label of specimen 51694: Océan Indien. Label of specimen 51698 missing. Remarks: According to Rosalie de Lamarck, two specimens were in her father’s collection. Neither of these specimens seems to match Lamarck’s or Kiener’s figures. Current taxonomic position: Pleuroploca trapezium (Linnaeus, 1758); type species of Pleuroploca Fischer, 1884 [Fasciolariidae]. Locality is Indo – Pacific.
