Abstract

Barbourisia rufa Parr, 1945. Red Whalefish. To 41 cm (16.1 in) TL (Melendez C. et al. 1991). Circumglobal at low latitudes; recorded as far north as Greenland (Amaoka in Okamura et al. 1995); western Pacific Ocean north to Japan (Amaoka in Masuda et al. 1984), Russian north-western Pacific (Orlov and Tokranov 2019); Emperor Seamounts; Hawai’i (Mecklenburg et al. 2002); Bering Sea (55°59’N, 168°45’W) (Maslenikov et al. 2013), and Pacific Ocean south of Amukta Pass, Aleutian Islands (Mecklenburg et al. 2002); off Washington (Mecklenburg et al. 2002) to north-central California (Eschmeyer and Herald 1983) to southern Chile (44°53’S, 73°30’W) (Meléndez C. et al. 1991). Pelagic and benthopelagic; depth: 120–2,000 m (394–6,562 ft) (Mecklenburg et al. 2002).
