Rhincodon typus Smith, 1828. Whale Shark. Reliable to at least 17.0 m (55.8 ft) (Weigman 2016), probable to 20.0 m (65.6 ft) TL (Chen et al. 1997). Circumglobal; western Pacific Ocean at least as far northward as just north of Hokkaido Island, Japan (Tomita et al. 2014); Patrick’s Point (41°10’N, 124°15’W), northern California to northern Chile and Islas Galápagos (Ebert 2003). Pelagic; depth: descends to in excess of 1,928 m (6,324 ft) (Tyminski et al. 2015).
