Grammar. تحفة الغريب فى الكلام على مغنى اللبيب This manuscript is now IO Bijapur 7 in the India Office collections. Size 111/2 in. by 71/2 in.; foll. 443. At first twenty-one, afterwards from nineteen to twenty-three lines in a page. A Commentary (by قال ... اقول ) on the preceding work, by Muḥammad b. Abu Bakr Makhdûmî 1 DAMÂMÎNÎ (d. A.H. 828). It is styled in the colophon تحفة الغريب فى الكلام على مغنى اللبيب . The author wrote it A.H. 824 [= 1424-25], at Nahrwâlah, in Gujarât [= mod. Patan]. Begins: الحمد لله الذى منح من لسان العرب الايادى الحسنة ، و جعله كنز الفصاحة فهو مغنى اللبيب عما سواه من الالسنة This seems to be the second of the three commentaries described by Ḥ. Kh. v. 657. The author’s date runs as follows: و كان تاليف هذا الشرح المشتمل على ثلاث مجلّدات بشهر (!) نهروالةَ من الكجرات الهنديّة فى خمسة اشهر و اربعة عشر يوما نجز فيها تاليفه و كتابته فى هذه المبيّضة و اوّل هذه المدّة يوم الخميس اوّل يوم من شهر ربيع الاول سنة اربع و عشرين و ثمان مائة وآخرها يوم الخميس ايضا الرابع عشر من شعبان المكرّم من هذه السنة Plainly written by two hands. Dated Friday, 4th Rabî’ I., 849 [=10 June 1445]. A lacuna on fol. 2 comprises the greater part of the preface. Bîj. Libr., A.H. 1026 [= 1617], from Shâh Nawâz Khân. Seal of Maḥmûd Malik al-tujjâr (A.H. 876 [= 1471-72]), and seal of Maḥmûd Khwâjah Jahân, apparently the same person. Cat. 234 (Nuhow), i. 1. 1 This MS. has المحزومى ; see, however, no. 964.
