Abstract

Colonization and reproduction of the Pied Water-Tyrant (Fluvicola pica, Tyrannidae) in intervened open spaces on the island of Margarita, Nueva Esparta state, Venezuela. Abstract. Here we report the establishment and reproduction of the Pied Water-Tyrant in intervened spaces in the territory of Margarita island (Caribbean sea, northeastern Venezuela). Visualizations were obtained from a non-systematic monitoring of birds started in 2014, in the sector nominated “El Puertico-Hato La Teja”, within the boundaries of the Laguna de Las Marites Natural Monument (LLM-NM). From January 2017 to August 2021, monthly censuses were carried out in five locations of the LLM-NM. Occasional observations were also incorporated, from 2016 to June 2021, in five locations on the island of Margarita, complemented with records in the eBird online database. All the locations of observation and records consulted were related to aquatic environments fed or nourished by the discharges (intentional or accidental leaks) of sewage from the sewage network of the urban planning and from the treatment systems of the plants established in the entity insular, whose frequent flooding in terrestrial spaces and water courses, favored the development of a vegetation made up of mangroves, and patches of freshwater plant species such as Typha dominguensis and Juncus sp., which favored the presence and reproduction of the species in these new habitats.
