Interactive key for the identification of species from the genus Haploniscus (Isopoda) distributed around Iceland

Abstract

This repository contains an interactive key that can be used to identify the described species of the genus Haploniscus that are found around Iceland. The key can be used to differentiate between the following species: Haploniscus aduncus Lincoln, 1985 Haploniscus ampliatus Lincoln, 1985 Haploniscus angustus Lincoln, 1985 Haploniscus astraphes Brökeland & Svavarsson, 2017 Haploniscus bicuspis (G. O. Sars, 1877) Haploniscus borealis Lincoln, 1985 Haploniscus foresti Chardy, 1974 Haploniscus hamatus Lincoln, 1985 Haploniscus spinifer Hansen, 1916 Haploniscus sp. A The interactive key contains digital drawings of habitus and distinguishing characters. In addition, it also includes geological distribution maps, depth distribution diagrams and species distribution models (where available). This interactive key can be displayed by using the software Intkey, which is also contained in this repository (following the conditions of use). The interactive species identification key was produced by comparing species descriptions (Brökeland and Svavarsson, 2017; Brökeland and Wägele, 2004; Chardy, 1974; Hansen, 1916; Lincoln, 1985; Menzies, 1962), and digitally illustrating based off and modified after previous drawings. Geographical maps were created using QGIS (QGIS Development Team, 2020) and depth analyses was conducted with Excel (Microsoft Corporation, 2021). Species distribution models were created utilizing “R” (R Core Team, 2020) as well as QGIS QGIS Development Team, 2020). The final key was produced using DELTA (Dallwitz, 1995; Dallwitz et al., 2000; Dallwitz, 1974, 1980; Dallwitz et al., 1993) and IntKey (Dallwitz, 1995; Dallwitz et al., 2000; Dallwitz, 1974, 1980; Dallwitz et al., 1993). As an interactive key it allows for easy identification based on morphological characters. Data Format This repository contains one file and one folder: start.bat – a batch file which loads the interactive key into the IntKey viewing software, and opens the software to view the key. int – a folder containing the illustrations, distinguishing characters and habitus required for the key. In addition, it encompasses species distribution maps, a depth analyses diagram, and species distribution models (where available). Lastly, it contains the necessary files to run the IntKey software. Please note that this software requires Windows 2000 or later; unfortunately, it is not possible to run on other operating systems. How to Use To display and use the interactive key from the downloaded repository, run the start.bat file. IntKey will open and the identification process can be started. To start the process based on morphological characters, select the item on the list below “Best Characters” within the upper left section of the program window. A pop-up will appear, providing drawings, that can be selected to eliminate taxa and enable identification. For an overview of specific species and their additional information such as geographical maps, these can be selected from the upper right section of the main window.
