Dinotoperla subserricauda Theischinger

Abstract

Dinotoperla subserricauda Theischinger (Fig. 21 AD) Larva. Remarks. Associated with adults using genetic methods. Examination of specimens held at Sydney Water suggested Yules (1997) D. sp. 1 included larvae of both D. subserricauda and D. uniformis. Material examined: New South Wales: 2 x larvae: Smith Creek at crossing on Thunderbolts Way (35km south of Walcha). -31.27833, 151.5553. Collected: 1-Nov-11, Collectors: J Mynott, P Suter & M Crump, Accession numbers: JMH1414, JMH1415. 3 x larvae: Small creek crossing Thunderbolts Way (between Quarry Road and Topdale Road). South of Walcha. -31.37172, 151.54803. Collected: 2-Nov-11, Collectors: J Mynott, P Suter & M Crump, Accession numbers: JMH1419, JMH1420, JMH1421. 1 x adult male: Tilbuster Ponds, Black Mountain, New England. -30.33278, 151.66417. Collected: Nov, 2011, Collector: Ivor Growns, Accession number: JMH1136. 1 x larva: Guy Fawkes River at Ebor. -30.40406, 152.34829. Collected: 10-Nov-10, Collectors: J. Mynott &M. Shackleton, Accession number: JMH1409. 1 x adult male: MacDonald River crossing Thunderbolts Way at The Flags / Niangala Rural Fire Brigade (approx. 40km south of Walcha). -31.34967, 151.53389. Collected: 2-Nov-11, Collectors: J Mynott, P Suter & M Crump, Accession number: JMH1127. 1 x larva: Barwick / Back Creek near Moffit falls. -30.49029, 152.34509. Collected: 10-Nov-10, Collectors: J. Mynott &M. Shackleton, Accession number: JMH1411. 1 x larva: Little Styx River at crossing, near entrance to New England National Park. -30.50783, 152.36659. Collected: 15-Nov-12, Collectors: J Mynott & D Black, Accession number: JMH1413. 1 x larva: Little Styx River at crossing, near entrance to New England National Park. -30.50783, 152.36659. Collected: 10-Nov-10, Collectors: J. Mynott & M. Shackleton, Accession number: JMH1437. 3 x larvae: Wallerawong Power Station outlet. Collected: 29-Sept-89, Collectors: Sydney Water. Kosciuszko National Park: 1 x adult male: Spicers Creek at crossing Long Plains Road. -35.64516, 148.57067. Collected: 6-Jan-13, Collectors: J Mynott & M Carey, Accession number: JMH1174. 2 x larvae: Eucumbene River at crossing Snowy Mountains Highway. - 35.8855, 148.51383. Collected: 5-Jan-13, Collectors: J Mynott & M Carey, Accession numbers: JMH1250, JMH1689. Length: 5.57.5 mm. Colour: Pale yellowish brown; dark mottling on head; wingpads light brown. Meso- and meta-nota with darker areas medially, pale bosses at base of wingpads. Abdomen slightly darker medially and laterally. Body: Robust; head and pronotum subequal; abdomen longer than thorax. Head: Pronounced mottling on posterior area of head. Smooth welt-like areas medial to antennae base. Antennae long, darkening in the last third; without fringe of long fine setae. Thorax: Pronotum wider than length; dorsal surface with scattered dark spots. Surface of nota with well socketed robust setae present, less so on wingpads. Legs: Outer surface of femora with two dark longitudinal stripes, and single stripe present on tibiae (usually visible in distal half); inner surface of femora with two dark patches present (one in proximal area, one in distal area); tibiae with single dark band in proximal area. Femora and tibiae without fringe of long fine setae on outer margin, some scattered long robust setae may be present. Short robust setae present on all surfaces excluding inner surfaces. Abdomen: Paraprocts triangular, long and broad. Two dark spots on dorsal surface of tergites, lateral area may have one or two present. Short robust setae present on surface of tergites; robust paddle-like setae present on hind margins of tergites, hind margin of tergite X with similar setae. Gill tuft dense, gills purplish. Cerci short, segments elongated from approximately segment 10; segments 310 with long robust setae on margin (length subequal to segment).
