Indo-West Pacific south to central Zululand (off St Lucia); local material 50–110 m (living 50–80 m). Notes. Western Indian Ocean specimens are smaller than those from the central Indo-West Pacific, and they have scales rather than hollow spines on the two peripheral cords. Subgenus Sarmaticus Gray, 1847. Type species (o.d.): Turbo sarmaticus Linnaeus, 1758.
