Gerres oyena (Forsskål in Niebuhr 1775) —Blacktip silverbiddy Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey. Species name spelled oeyena in original description; the spelling oyena is an unjustified emendation in prevailing usage and can be continued. Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales (Australia), New Caledonia and Tonga. Found on inshore soft bottoms adjacent to coral reefs, 0–20 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
