Salmoneus carvachoi Anker 2007

Authors: Anker, Arthur;

Salmoneus carvachoi Anker 2007

Abstract

Salmoneus carvachoi Anker, 2007 Salmoneus carvachoi Anker 2007: 27, fig. 3; Anker 2010a: 201, fig. 14f [not 14e, error in the text on p. 201, correct in the figure legend on p. 200]; Almeida et al. 2012: 15, fig. 2F; Almeida et al. 2013: 1400; Oliveira et al. 2015: 1, fig. 1; Vera-Caripe et al. 2015: 348, fig. 2A, B; Oliveira et al. 2018: 2, fig. 1. Salmoneus ortmanni — Carvacho 1979: 453; Christoffersen 1980: 137; Christoffersen 1982: 94; Christoffersen, 1998: 362 (part.); Coelho dos Santos & Coelho 2001: 78 [not S. ortmanni (Rankin, 1898)]. Material examined. 1 non-ovigerous specimen (cl 3.8 mm), USNM 1170988, Colombia, Rosario, Isla Grande, intertidal, leg. R. Lemaitre, 07.03.1997; 1 ovigerous specimen (cl 5.2 mm), 1 non-ovigerous specimen (cl 4.5 mm, missing major cheliped), FLMNH UF 51924, USA, Florida, Fort Pierce, sta. FP 90-3, leg. R. B. Manning, no date. Tentative identification: 1 non-ovigerous specimen (cl 3.7 mm, missing both chelipeds), FLMNH UF 51925, USA, Louisiana, sta. PLA-IV-1-2, leg. D.L. Felder, 27.07.1981. Remarks. Salmoneus carvachoi appears to be widespread in the western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the southeastern USA (Florida, possibly Louisiana) throughout the Caribbean Sea (Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, French Antilles) to Brazil (Pernambuco, Paraiba, Bahia, São Paulo, Paraná) (Anker 2007, 2010a; Almeida et al. 2012; Vera-Caripe et al. 2015; present study). The material from USA and Colombia represents the first records of the species from these countries. The association of S. carvachoi with Alpheus estuariensis Christoffersen, 1984 has been confirmed throughout most of these two species’ range and appears to be highly species-specific (Anker 2007; Almeida et al. 2012; Vera-Caripe et al. 2015; Oliveira et al. 2015, 2018).
