Juniper (Juniperus communis) planting conducted in the UK wider environment 1960-2020

Abstract

Dataset analysed and presented in "Investigating the Role of Restoration Plantings in Introducing Disease–a Case Study Using Phytophthora" Forests 2021, 12. The data are provided with kind permission from all of the contributing organisations identified in the "source" column; "BSBI" is an abbreviation for the Botanical Society of Britian and Ireland and full references to published data surveys are given in the above jounral article. The data are provided to support open access research but care should be taken in their further interpretation as a secondary source with known gaps in both coverage and supporting metadata. See the "source" column to identify the primary source material. This dataset compiles known records of Juniperus communis planting in the United Kingdown conducted 1960-2020 in the wider environment i.e. not relating to gardens, parks, or intermediate locations such as shelterbelts. Locations are provided at "tetrad" (2x2km) resolution with the year of planting / record observation provided in the "year.to" column. Where a range of dates were provided in the source material, the most recent year was retained as "year.to". Records were only added to this dataset if the grid reference was supplied at minimum tetrad resolution with a planting/observation year, and only records with duplicated recorder name, tetrad, year and comments fields were removed. Therefore, the same planting events may be documented by multiple records if supplied by multiple recorders/sources and/or with different "year.to" or other metadata. Information in the remaining columns was compiled from the comments field supplied with BSBI records or information supplied in supporting emails or survey reports, categorised according to the keywords outlined in the journal article. Data categorisation was performed by F. Donald and is provided in this dataset (i.e. the data supplied here are not the original records provided by the source). Where provided, details in the following categories describe: "Number" - number of juniper trees planted per tetrad/year "Responsible organisation" - type of organisation overseeing the planting project "Reason" - motivation for planting "Source material" - planting material provenance "Material type" - type of material propagated "Propagation setting" - propagation location masked to facility type "Monitoring" - comments about any follow up monitoring conducted
