South Africa distribution: From the Orange River (NC) to southwest of Cape Agulhas (WC). Remarks: Compagno (1984a) reported the first South African record of this species from off the southwestern Cape. Previous southern African records were from off Namibia (Bass et al., 1976). This is one of the most common species of deep-sea lanternsharks off the South African west coast. Conservation status: LC (2020).
