Abstract

Abstract: The globalisation of music nowadays permits the coexistence in similar contexts of flamenco, songs by singer-songwriters, and the Andalusian popular songs known as coplas. However, their origins differ in a key respect, that of recognized authorship. While flamenco singing (cante jondo) is an anonymous expression of woe, so-called “original songs” celebrate the cult of the word, of poets and song-writers. And the copla has a narrative dimension not always found in the other two sorts of music: every composition contains a complete history, a melodrama in three minutes with a prologue, climax and resolution. With the globalisation of music, these distinctions are increasingly blurred, and far from being a creative accident, heterodoxy and eclecticism are now an imperative.
