Abstract

Die Sammlung des Historischen Museums Luzern umfasst eine ganze Reihe textiler Objekte, unter denen sich auch mehrere Korsette befinden. Zweifelsohne gehört dieses Kleidungsstück zu den am kontrovers diskutiertesten der Modegeschichte. Über vier Jahrhunderte war es essentieller Bestandteil des westlichen Kleiderkanons. Heute feiert es als kurzlebiges Modeaccessoire Renaissance oder wird als fetischisiertes Objekt gehandelt. Dass das Tragen eines Korsetts zwischen Spätmittelalter und Erstem Weltkrieg die Regel war, ist heute, da es weitgehend als Frauen unterdrückendes «Folterinstrument» vergangener Zeiten gilt, nur noch schwer vorstellbar. Kritische Stimmen aber sind keine Erfindung der Moderne. Seit dem 18. Jahrhundert haben Mediziner, Reformpädagogen und Künstler dem Korsett den Kampf angesagt – mit mehr oder weniger grossem Erfolg. Die Geschichte des Korsetts erzählt nämlich nicht nur von Zucht und Unterdrückung, sondern ist zugleich ein Indikator für sozialen Status, Selbstdisziplin und Ästhetik. Es mag nicht nur dem Modediktat der Zeit, sondern auch diesen Attributen geschuldet sein, dass das Korsett trotz vehementer Kritiken bis ins 20. Jahrhundert en vogue blieb. Im Folgenden werden die unterschiedlichen Positionen und Meinungen zum Korsett als eines der widersprüchlichsten Kleidungsstücke der vergangenen Jahrhunderte gegenübergestellt.
