Koranic Science, a Commentary [IO Islamic 1570]

Abstract

al-Qurʼān القرآن الكريم This manuscript is now IO Islamic 1570 in the India Office collections. [metadata: Otto Loth, A Catalogue of the Arabic Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, (volume 1), no. 109 here with further notations and hyperlinks]. 109. 1570. Size 91/2 in. by 51/2 in.; foll. 411. Fifteen, afterwards about twenty-tree lines in a page. The first part of a Mystical Commentary, or rather annotations on single verses of the Koran, following the order of the Sûrahs. The title and the author cannot be ascertained. This MS. is imperfect and mutilated at the beginning. Ends with Sû. 18. Colophon: تمت تمام شد هذا الکتاب الحقائق من تفسیر مسهات (؟). However, this title (as well as that of the following MSS.) seems only to be taken from one of the paragraphs into which the commentary is usually divided; viz., حقائق, لطائف, and الملتقط. The author, who quotes numerous mystical authorities of all times, belongs to a very modern period. Some passages of his work are in Persian. Begins: الادراک و حکی عن الشبلی انه قال. Plainly written. Foll. 1-38 in a different hand. [Hastings.]
