Le soja, comme toutes les légumineuses, est l‘hôte d’une bactérie fixatrice d‘azote. Pour le soja, il s‘agit de la bactérie Bradyrhizobium japonicum qui n‘est pas présente naturellement dans les sols européens. Une inoculation soigneuse des semences ou du sol est nécessaire pour que la racine de la plante en développement soit infectée par cette bactérie.
