Western Atlantic—USA (North Carolina to Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Antilles, Venezuela, and Brazil (Amapá, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, São Paulo) (Rathbun 1937; Sawaya 1944; Guinot-Dumortier 1959; Holthuis 1959; Coelho 1969; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Powers 1977; Goeke 1980, 1984; Taissoun 1982; Williams 1984; Abele & Kim 1986; Barreto et al. 1993; Moran & Dittel 1993; Melo 1996; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Almeida et al. 2007a; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009). Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo do not include the specific locality or analyzed material; this occurrence is based on a bibliographic survey (Dall’Occo et al. 2004). It is found from shallow waters to 200m in different sort of habitats (Melo 1996; Almeida et al. 2007a), being difficult to sample it.
