Anthoceros laevis Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1139. 1753. "Habitat in Europa & America boreali." RCN: 8154. Lectotype (Proskauer in Rabenhorst’s Kryptogamen-Flora , ed. 3, 6: 1315. 1958): [icon] " Anthoceros major " in Micheli, Nov. Pl. Gen.: 11, t. 7, f. 1. 1729. Current name: Phaeoceros laevis (L.) Prosk. (Anthocerotaceae). Note: Proskauer (in Ann. Bot. 12: 259. 1948; Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 78: 343. 1951) initially indicated 1272.2 (LINN) as the type but, recognising that this sheet was a post-1753 addition to the collection, rejected this choice in favour of the Micheli plate. Hässel de Menéndez (in Cryptog. Bryol. Lichénol. 5: 202. 1984) illustrates the Dillenian material extant at OXF.
