Amaranthus hypochondriacus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 991. 1753. "Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 7185. Lectotype (Townsend in Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Amaranthaceae: 25. 1985): Herb. Linn. No. 1117.24 (LINN). Current name: Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. (Amaranthaceae). Note: Sauer (in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 54: 111. 1967) discussed the original material for the name but did not designate a type.
