Senecio squalidus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 869. 1753. "Habitat in Europa australi." RCN: 6289. Lectotype (Alexander & Mill in Jarvis & Turland in Taxon 47: 366. 1998): Herb. Linn. No. 996.33 (LINN). Current name: Senecio squalidus L. (Asteraceae). Note: Although Alexander (in Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinburgh 37: 396. 1979) noted the existence of 996.33 (LINN), he did not designate it as type. Abbott & al. (in Watsonia 23: 123-137. 2000) provide evidence for the hybrid origin of this taxon.
