Panicum colonum Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 870. 1759. ["Habitat in Indiae cultis."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1: 84 (1753). RCN: 481. Lectotype (Hitchcock in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 12: 119. 1908): Browne, Herb. Linn. No. 80.23 (LINN). Current name: Echinochloa colonum (L.) Link (Poaceae). Note: Nicolson (in Taxon 35: 324. 1986) discusses the gender of the epithet “colonum” as, in some detail, does Ward (in Sida 21: 2171-2183. 2005). The latter concludes that the correct form in Echinochloa is " colonum " rather than " colona ".
