Origanum syriacum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 590. 1753. "Habitat - - - –” RCN: 4295. Lectotype (Paton in Jarvis & al. in Taxon 50: 516. 2001): [icon] "Marum syriacum" in Plantin, Pl. Stirp. Icon.: 499. 1581. Current name: Origanum syriacum L. (Lamiaceae). Note: As pointed out by Harley (in Watsonia 14: 86. 1982), Ietswaart (in Leiden Bot. Ser. 4: 87. 1980) designated 743.12 (LINN) as the type of both O. syriacum and O. maru L. Harley stated "while the sheet indicated is unquestionably the type of O. maru, it can hardly be the type of O. syriacum, which apparently does not occur among the sheets in Linnaeus’ herbarium in London, and must be looked for elsewhere". Meikle (Fl. Cyprus 2: 1267. 1985) stated "TYPE: Probably the illustration in Lobel...t. 499 (1591)", i.e. the Plantin illustration, but his use of the word “probably” contradicts Art. 7.11 of the Code.
