Lectotype (Sauer in Brittonia 16: 142. 1964): [icon] " Phaseolus maximus, siliqua ensiformi nervis insignita, et semine albo membranula incluso" in Sloane, Voy. Jamaica 1: 177, t. 114, f. 1, 2, 3. 1707. - Typotype: Herb. Sloane 3: 67 (BM-SL). Current name: Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC. (Fabaceae: Faboideae). Note: Fawcett & Rendle (Fl. Jamaica 4: 61. 1920) stated "Type in Herb. Mus. Brit, and specimen from Jacquin’s Herb." but this cannot be accepted as a formal typification.
