The aim of this foundations paper is to develop initial understanding based on a critical engagement with the existing literature of how key terms that are used to frame the work of the Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures (TESF) Network Plus are understood. In particular, the paper will seek to develop working definitions of the ideas of ‘sustainable development’ (SD), ‘sustainable futures’, ‘education for sustainable development’ (ESD), ‘education systems’ and of ‘transformation’ that are fundamental for our work.
