Starting from the understanding of two categories of Sardinian Marxist Antonio Gramsci, namely hegemony and extended State, we will reflect on their use in the methodological design of a historical research. In this endeavor, we will approach some works that examined such a way, in order to verify, in test form, their limits and possibilities in such or as historical context. Therefore, we will divide our work into three sections. In the first, we will use the categories themselves, with emphasis on their reception in Brazil; Then, we will point out three historiographical work published in Brazil that use them; Finally, we will reflect on the use of such concepts in historical research.
