Influence of experience and gender in the declarative knowledge of university students in basketball initiation

Abstract

Abstract: Introduction: The study of declarative knowledge is an important factor for the evaluation of progress during the teaching-learning process in sport. Aim: This research aims to analyze the effect of the application of an intervention program through the hybridization of Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) and Sport Education methodologies in the teaching of basketball by university students and identify the influence of previous experience and gender. Methods: 62 students (44 men and 18 women) of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences carried out a test of declarative knowledge at the beginning and at the end of the course of Initiation to Basketball, which was taught following a TGfU-SE hybridization methodology. The statistical analysis was performed using the t-test of repeated measures (test-retest) and t-test of independent samples (differences between experience and gender). Results: The main results show a significant improvement of declarative knowledge at the end of the process (p<0.01; d=0.55 moderate), the improvement being greater in women (p<0.01; d=0.87 high) than in men (p<0.01; d=0.40 low), due to lower initial knowledge (p<0.01; d=0.42 low). Regarding experience, expert students did not experience improvement p=0.36; d=0.19 trivial) while non-expert students improved their knowledge (p<0.01; d=0.53 moderate). Conclusions: The TGfU-SE methodology is an ideal methodology for teaching invasion sports and the gender and experience variables must be considered for the specific adaptation of the teaching-learning process.
