«Studying the political map of parts of the world, it is necessary to clearly imagine who is with whom and against whom». Curricula on geography of public schools of Kharkiv during the German occupation 1941–1943

Abstract

The purpose of the study is the process of developing school curricula in geography for public schools in Kharkiv, during the Nazi occupation. Methodologically, the work is based on a retrospective approach and a combination of the principle of historicism, the use of which allowed to make this study as objective as possible. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time in the domestic historical science the specifics of topics and methodological guidelines on the geography of Kharkiv schools during the German occupation were analyzed. Conclusions. During the years of Nazi rule in occupied Kharkiv, special attention was paid to geography (along with other social sciences in high school). After all, this discipline not only informed young people about the surrounding nations and countries, but also laid the foundations of national self-consciousness by connecting Ukraine with European civilization. Despite the declarative nature, the ethnopolitical educational paradigm in geography created by Kost Dubnyak was based on the scientific concept of the famous Ukrainian scientist Stepan Rudnytsky. In structuring school curricula in geography, as well as in other subjects, the compilers started from the general German standards, which Europeanized and Germanized the disciplines of the new Ukrainian school. In the process of studying geography, teachers had to form the spatial imagination of students in the existing geopolitical realities of those times. According to the authors of the article, anti-Soviet and germanophile tendencies, in combination with elements of Ukrainian patriotism, were to constitute an educational and methodological complex for the acquisition of geographical knowledge by the younger generation, who were to live in the Third Reich. Such a scientific and theoretical combination of geographical science was to contribute to the gradual transformation of the worldview of schoolchildren, laying the foundations of a new system of values, against the background of changes in the political identity of young Ukrainians.
