LIBER 2020 - Session #9: Tools for Transparency and Open Access

Abstract

These are the slides from the LIBER 2020 Session Tools for Transparency and Open Access. Session Description: As library resources increasingly move online and become more accessible to the wider public, it is essential to guarantee their trustworthiness. An important aspect in ensuring Open Access is, thus, transparency. In this session, three presentations will showcase successful developments in the field of Transparency and Open Access, as well as highlighting their future impact and implications. Sarah Ames will present work underway at the National Library of Scotland to present collections as data in an open and transparent way. In September 2019, the National Library of Scotland launched the Data Foundry, providing access to several data collections. These collections are published openly, in reusable formats and the Library does not assert further copyright over the databases it produces. Data Foundry also provides openness on the decision-making process behind the items ‘turned into data’. In her presentation, Ames will focus on the changes to the existing workflow, the processes needed to produce the Data Foundry and highlight the challenges of producing data online in an open, transparent manner. Next, Maurits de Graaf will focus on library tools for Green and Gold Open Access, highlighting their actual and potential future impacts and implications, as tools and policies by libraries are an important factor in realizing Open Access. He will discuss the impact of Green Open Access tools, the emergence of the APC-market alongside the subscription-market as well as the evolving Gold OA toolbox of libraries. Finally, he will shift his focus to the implications and impact of transformative agreements. Lastly, Nicole Krüger and Dr. Tamara Pianos will showcase the EconBiz Academic Career Kit, established to help young researchers foster research skills by providing open online learning materials. The Module covers topics such as how to publish your paper (in Open Access), as well as metrics and networking and Research Data Management. In this presentation they will share challenges in offering interactive open educational resources (OER). These include finding a non-proprietary platform that supports the creation of interactive OER and sharing interactive OER through online platforms.
