Happold (2013a) followed Claessen & De Vree (1991) in considering minor to be a junior synonym of Epomophorus labiatus. She also pointed out that Bergmans (1997) was strongly opposed to this, as he pointed out a number errors concerning the E. labiatus specimens used by Claessen & De Vree (1991). The distribution map shows that the specimens from the eastern part from the DRC fit well with the major (eastern African) distribution area of the species. The specimen from Congo da Lemba (RMCA 408a, a juvenile male) does seem to fit with a potential distribution along the Angolan coast, which, however, is not yet supported by material from that country (ACR 2016).
