The world’s dependence on capture fisheries and the aquaculture sector is threatened not only by inadequate management of these aquatic resources but also by factors external to the sector such as Climate Change. The factsheet presents some of the results obtained from a review of the existing literature regarding the economic valuation of climate change risks for the aquaculture sector. The risks that climate change poses on aquaculture are related to the growth rate of fish and cages breakage with the subsequent stock losses. The first one linked to an increase in the variability of water temperature and acidification, by itself and combined with other natural and human-induced changes; and the second one linked to extreme weather events, that in turn also affect the biomass growth.
