In the context of journalism education, fostering the habit of being well informed is a core competence. This study introduces gaurtest.info, an online self-assessment platform developed within a teaching innovation project at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). The tool enables Communication students to evaluate their knowledge of current events through weekly online quizzes, encouraging autonomous learning and media literacy. Based on a sample of 413 students from various communication degrees, the study shows significant improvement in students’ news consumption habits and their self-perceived awareness of current affairs. Results suggest that digital platforms, when combined with contextualised news content, effectively promote critical reading and engagement with diverse media sources. The integration of this platform into the journalism curriculum increased participation rates and boosted students’ confidence and proficiency in understanding news. This pedagogical model highlights the relevance of formative self-evaluation tools for the acquisition of professional skills in higher education and supports the use of digital technologies to enhance journalistic competencies.
