Submitted on 15 April 2020, this submission to the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples calls attention to the importance of intellectual property and related rights (IPR) to the repatriation of ceremonial objects and human remains, and to the implementation of articles 11, 12, and 13 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It outlines key aspects of IPR for states, cultural heritage institutions and Indigenous peoples to consider in the context of repatriation and proposes a strategy around IPR repatriation.
