Uma explanação sobre a tecnologia, produtos e padronização dos barramentos de campo é apresentada a partir do entendimento de sua relação com as redes e sistemas utilizados no ambiente industrial. A arquitetura de redes para aplicações industriais têm particularidades de estruturação que a diferencia das soluções usadas, por exemplo, no processamento de dados e, portanto, ao se tentar padronizá-las e estruturar sua arquitetura, é necessário considerar as particularidades da área.
