SUMMARY The research of perfectionism is characterized by the existence of the opposed understandings on the essential characteristics of this complex construct. Although 56 perfectionism is a feature that substantially affects diverse aspects of mental health and psychosocial adaptation of an individual, there is still no unique definition of this trait. A literature review suggests that the only common denominator of the perfectionism research is the constant shift in its conceptualization, which, at the same time, is a difficulty, and also a strong scholar-research impulse. One of the best ways to gain insight of the nature of this personal construct is to explore factors and processes that cause its onset and development. Therefore, the etiology of perfectionism has been considered in terms of the first attempts of its conceptualisation. In this paper, we shall look to the numerous factors that affect the development of the perfectionism and present a review of different theoretical models of its etiology.
