An Introduction to Perceptually Congruent Sonification

Authors: Joe Fitzpatrick;

An Introduction to Perceptually Congruent Sonification

Abstract

An early iteration of the PerCS framework presented to the Student ThinkTank at the 25th International Conference on Auditory Display. Presentation and poster attached. Questions asked: - Q: Is the proposed guideline targeted solely at sonification practitioners? - A: Primarily, yes. However, the option to listen to (and visualise) examples of auditory phenomena that have been identified using Auditory Scene Analysis will be available to the user regardless of their intention. - Q: How will the efficacy of the guideline be evaluated? - A: Peer feedback (qualitative). Suggestion: Use Thematic Analysis. - Q: Will the proposed website be accessible for the blind and visually impaired? - A: As the main goal of the site is to present examples of auditory phenomena aurally first, the researcher will aim to make it accessible for BVI users. (The visualisation of auditory examples is a secondary goal). Suggestion: Seek advice and include qualitative feedback from experienced sonification designers who are blind or visually impaired. Additional (related work): PhD research related to Auditory Scene Analysis and sonification currently ongoing at the Georgia Tech Sonification Lab.
