The role of Kitsch in Clothing Convergence

Abstract

The role of Kitsch in Clothing Convergence Marzieh Namvar Motlagh, MA in Art Research, Professor at the University of Science and Culture, Tehran, Iran Kitsch is a particular type of intertextual relation whose various representations can be observed in the area of culture and science. When a text is produced through copying and simulating its pretext, the product is called Kitsch. Today this type of intertextual relations, that is, Kitsch, is widely used as a major method in producing clothing. Throughout history, clothing has always been a key element in defining the identity and culture of every nation; however, with today’s widespread use of phenomena such as kitsch, unified clothing has replaced clothing variety. This article tries to study kitsch in the Iranian community through a semiotic approach focusing on the clothing and fashion sector. The present study utilizes the “intertextuality” approach and the “social semiotics” approach, Landowski’s edition. Landowski divides social relations into four semiotic systems: dandy, snob, bear and chameleon, with a reference group in the center. Each of these social systems has their own behavior. Kitsch is behavior most associated with snobs. This paper will study kitsch in the Iranian women’s clothing system through an intertextual and social semiotic approach. The samples in this research are clothing retail pages on Instagram. Keywords: kitsch, semiotics, fashion, clothing system, intertextuality.
