Semiotics of respect in "Zal O Mehrab" story in Shahnemeh

Abstract

Semiotics of respect in "Zal O Mehrab" story in Shahnemeh Abstract Deconstruction is an approach derived from post structuralist semiotics in the 1960s by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. It helps to understand the relationship between text and meaning. Some theorists such as Foucault, Lacan, and Kristeva developed their ideas about "deconstruction" and a "floating signifier". They expressed that a floating signifier can refer to more than one signified; it doesn't have referent in semiotics and discourse analysis. Shahnameh, the world's longest epic poem by Ferdowsi, contains a lot of signifiers which as Saussure believed may seem to have a particular and static signified at first sight. Although there are some examples like those mentioned, but some other instances have more than one prime meaning. This article is done on the basis of post structuralist semiotics of the story of "Zal o Mehrab" from Shahnameh. It tries to study the relationship between the signifiers of "respect" and their signifieds and also to discover the effect of these signifieds on social actions. It demonstrates that the signifier – signified relationship is not fixed and one signifier can involve more than one particular and agreed meaning. Keywords: respect, floating signifier, deconstruction, Derrida, semiotics, post structuralist.
